History of Newport Beach: The Upper Bay of Newport is a canyon carved out by a stream and the Lower Bay of Newport was formed later by ocean currents which brought in a tremendous amount of sand, which is now considered the Balboa Peninsula of Newport Beach. What is now recognized as the Newport Beach beachside real estate market was originally inhabited by Indians and their relics are still visible across the region. During the 1800’s settlers began take over ownership due to the massive amount of land available. Believe it or not? the State of California originally sold acres of land for only $1. After hearing this incredible news ,buyers from the Bay Area founded the San Joaquin Ranch (which is in close proximity to current day UC Irvine). Facilitating the remarkable investment opportunities, in the early 1900’s the Pacific Electric Railway initiated a terminal in the city, which connected the community with Downtown L.A.
The famous Newport Harbor and Bay: The Harbor of Newport Beach is a semi-artificial one created by the dredging the local estuary. During this period numerous artificial islands were constructed, which are currently covered by private estate homes. At one point in time the Newport Harbor backed maritime industries such as; commercial fishing, shipbuilding and boatbuilding – present day its highest and best use is for recreational purposes. There is under 10,000 boats found there. The Catalina Flyers ferry to Catalina Island, harbor tours, sport fishing and whale watching is a sampling of the Commercial maritime operations. The Bay is bisected by PCH Highway One, which is not high enough for the majority of sail boats and large shipping vessels to pass through. The northern-end crosses adjacent to Lido Island caters to many small business centers, and the Lido Marina Village now offers a port for “Party Boats”, and additional local commerce in the city of Newport Beach. In the late 1920’s a property was constructed at the entrance of the harbor which is now called The China House of China Cove, and was developed and influenced by traditional Chinese architecture. It was a landmark of the city until it was torn-down in the 1980’s. Today the Newport Bay estuary is simply a tiny water stream originating from San Diego Creek.
Culture and Nightlife in Newport Beach: The Newport Theater Arts Center offers top-notch live theater, with very reasonable ticket prices in a 90-seat venue for the residents of Newport Beach as well as visitors to the city. Obviously, seafood restaurants dominate the local culinary market and the bars and nightclubs scattered across the community. It is interesting to point out the Newport Beach has 3 sister cities; Antibes (France), Ensenada (Mexico) and Okazaki (Japan).
